Blue and black aerosol paint has been sprayed in patches along the bridge in Shoreham, including on the panels, the deck, and the central posts.

District councillor for Marine ward Joss Loader said it was believed the paint had appeared on Bank Holiday Monday, while she had seen the graffiti the following day.

She said: “It is fairly expansive in short bursts and it is a shame on that bridge. And we have got all of those broken panels spread around intermittently.”

Black and blue stripes of paint have been found on the bridge.

The paint follows a number of incidents where glass panels were smashed, but it is not known if the events are connected.

County councillor for Saltings Division Mick Clark said: “West Sussex County Council are going to be there tomorrow and are looking at a strategy about how to move forward. We still want the glass replaced, and we want it done quickly.”

Councillor Loader added: “There is CCTV on the bridge so we have suggested we have increased signage. The police can review any footage. West Sussex has invested £10 million in the bridge which people love. It is a fantastic bridge.”
