Paratroopers run Seaford Half Marathon for Private Dan Prior

MORE than 60 paratroopers will run the Seaford Half Marathon in full kit in memory of Private Dan Prior from Peacehaven.

The soldiers from the Second Battalion Parachute Regiment will take part in the race on Sunday June 5.

Former Tideway School pupil Dan died on March 18 from injuries he received in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand Province, Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device.

The annual Seaford Half Marathon is organised by Newhaven Peacehaven and Seaford (NP&S) Lions.

Event spokesperson Clem Collins said: “2 Para have recently returned from their tour of duty in Afghanistan. “While enjoying home comforts his army colleagues have decided to run in the Lions’ Half Marathon in memory of Dan and in order to raise funds for his wife Emily and son, Logan.

“Dan joined the Paratroopers, inspired by his uncle, Steve Prior, who also served with 2 Para and gave his life in the Falklands conflict at the same age as Dan.”

Dan married Emily in October 2009 and he became a father to Logan on February 21 shortly before he died.

His family also includes, parents Ian and Gillian and twin brothers Adam and Lee, who along with several of Dan’s friends will also be running in his memory.

NP&S Lions Half Marathon is run by the Lions Club with help from Seaford Striders.

This year more than 600 runners are expected to enter.

Online entries are accepted up to 29 May 2011.
