Donna Smith, 37, of Anson Road, Worthing, is urging West Sussex County Council to install a crossing in Palatine Road and has gained over 60 signatures in a matter of days.

Her petition comes after the latest incident involving her 12-year-old daughter, Maddi, who was nearly hit by a car ‘going too fast’.

Mrs Smith said: “The car was only a few steps away when it had to brake suddenly. My daughter was already crossing the road and she said the car was going too fast.

“She didn’t say anything at first as she didn’t want to worry me.

“I know it could be costly, but do you wait until something has happened, or do you try and prevent it?”

Mrs Smith’s daughter has encountered problems since attending Durrington High School, and while she can safely cross The Boulevard using a pedestrian crossing, Palatine Road is a different matter.

Mrs Smith said: “Maddi is very road aware and has got her head screwed on right.

“But it’s horrible, as once they leave the front door, you are trusting not just your child, but the other road users to get them to school safely.

“It’s a scary thing.”
