Parents speak out on speed dangers

Gloria Marshall and Steve Mohabir know only too well the terrible consequences of speed. In one of the worst speed-related road crashes in Sussex, eight people lost their lives on the A23 including Mrs Marshall's 18 year-old daughter Katherine and her 20 year-old son Aaron.

They were passengers in a BMW which crashed over a central reservation barrier and struck a Land Rover Freelander. The 19-year-old driver of the BMW and two 17-year-old girls who were passengers were also killed. The five friends came from Crawley.

Three died in the Freelander including Steve's two year-old son Marcus.

Since the inquest earlier this year, Gloria from Crawley and Steve of Godalming who was the only survivor from the Freelander, have spoken out about the dangers and consequences of speed.

On Monday they visited Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester to look at a unique skills course which West Sussex County Council runs for young drivers aged 17-25.

More than 600 young people have already attended the skills upgrade launched as part of West Sussex County Council's accident prevention work. Many have had their places paid for by parents and relatives.
