Parents vent spleen over decision to shut nursery

FURIOUS Worthing parents have criticised West Sussex County Council for the forthcoming closure of a nursery, leaving them with nowhere to send their children.

Parents of South Lodge nursery in Crescent Road have applied to have the decision called in before it becomes final.

The cut off point before the cabinet's decision takes effect is 5pm on Thursday and communications have been sent to councillors asking for a call-in.

The county says the nursery will be in the red by more than 75,000 by the end of the year, with occupancy fluctuating between 30 and 40 per cent, and must close before Easter.

But parent Sally Harding, a senior legal assistant, said the council had done nothing to advertise or promote the nursery and the situation could have been avoided.

"Had the council had a meeting with parents around 18 months ago to discuss the difficulties, we could all have got together to try to drum up business by advertising and putting forward alternative suggestions. I am sure we could have filled the spaces," she said.
