Parish comes to Heathfield

JEAN PAUL Sartre and Juliette Greco might not have lit up their Gauloises there but locals believe Heathfield High Street is getting more like Paris every day.

The Left Bank references crept into Monday's parish council meeting when planning committee members debated a licence application by Valentine Rodriguez, owner of the restaurant, Vanilla.

Committee chairman Peter Newnham explained this was not a new application; simply an extension of the existing licence so 'you can have a drink while you are sitting out at your Parisian table.'

But committee member Michael Woodhouse took an altogether more Anglo Saxon view.

He said: 'I don't know that we want to go all Parisian '“ this is Heathfield after all.'

The good-natured debate ended in approval for Mr Rodriguez who said: 'From the vibes I've got since I have been here people are trying hard to bring the village up.

'Pavements have been improved and people don't just drive through here anymore '“ they stop and shop.

'People I've spoken to are really positive although I understand there are still people who don't want too much change.'
