Parked lorry chaos

POLICE should take serious action to stop heavy lorries parking on the pavement in Lewes High Street, claims Lewes MP Norman Baker.

It is becoming more and more common for lorries to mount the pavement to deliver goods, he said.

'In doing so they often block the road for buses and other big vehicles,' he added.

'They also block the pavement for pedestrians, particularly those who are in wheelchairs or who have children in buggies, and damage the flagstones themselves.

'And of course once a lorry mounts the pavement, others follow suit.'

In one typical incident this week, a lorry parked for more than an hour on the pavement up School Hill, occupying three-quarters of the width of the pavement and preventing traffic from passing when a lorry arrived and was unable to get through.

'It's about time the police got more serious about giving out tickets to those who park in this way,' he continued.

'Lewes is not made for giant vehicles and suppliers ought to consider either delivering outside working hours or using vehicles more suited to the streets of the town.'
