Parking banned outside Bersted Primary School

PARKING is set to be banned outside the South Bersted C of E Primary School.

County council highways officers want to bring in a weekday parking restriction along part of Church Lane.

The ban around the school's entrance would stretch on both sides for some 65m between the road's northern parking lay-by and Leas Court.

It will replace the current road markings which ask motorists to keep clear but lack legal backing.

A statement by Tony Kershaw, the council's head of legal and democratic services, said: "South Bersted C of E Primary School has an extended catchment area and, as a result, many parents drive their children to school.

"As part of the safer routes to school programme, it is proposed

to reinforce the advisory 'school keep clear' zig-zag markings on Church Lane with a waiting restriction 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday to improve safety for vulnerable road users at the entrance to the school."

Consultation about the proposed ban is being carried out by the county council until September 2.

Disabled shoppers are likely to be given their own parking space outside Felpham's shops.

A request by residents has led to the proposed bay being suggested on Felpham Road opposite its junction with Grassmere Close.

Tony Kershaw, West Sussex County Council's head of legal and democratic services, said: "The main shopping area for Felpham is Felpham Road.

"In places, where the road is narrow, parking is prohibited and, where road width permits, parking is controlled by limited waiting bays.

"Following a request from local residents, a review of the parking restrictions was undertaken to identify a suitable location for provision of a disabled bay to improve access to the shops for disabled drivers."

The change is subject to consultation which will last until September 2.

At the same time, the county council intends to change the access protection line outside 82 Felpham Road to double yellow lines.
