Parking consultation gets underway in Lewes

COUNCIL chiefs are holding exhibitions about parking in Lewes to attract views from residents and businesses.

They are keen to find out what people in the coastal areas think about their current policies too.

To that end East Sussex County Council will also be holding exhibitions in Seaford and Telscombe.

The consultation will focus on Lewes town and its surrounding villages, including Ringmer, Falmer and Barcombe. This is part of the Lewes Parking Review that was launched in November and will involve a comprehensive look at all on street parking controls to see whether any changes are needed.

Letters are going out to the residents of Lewes and the surrounding areas to let them know how they can have their say.

Lead cabinet member for transport and environment Matthew Lock said: “Parking controls were introduced in Lewes and the surrounding villages over five years ago and have generally worked very well.

“But there is always room for improvement and we are now carrying out this review to make sure they best serve the current needs of residents, businesses and visitors.”

He continued: “However, also we want to hear from people who live outside the area but who visit Lewes for work, shopping or socially.

“So we will be holding exhibitions in Telscombe and Seaford as well as in and around Lewes.

“Although we are not planning to undertake a comprehensive review of parking in the coastal towns, we are taking this opportunity to find out what people think about parking in these areas to see if any changes are required.”

Transport consultant Atkins has been appointed to consult with local residents, businesses and interested parties.

Findings will be published and the council will ask the consultant to draft proposals to address issues.

People who might be affected by any changes will have a chance to comment on the proposals and to suggest alterations, before plans are finalised.

Councillors will consider any objections before deciding whether or not the changes should be implemented.
