At the latest meeting for Arun’s development control committee councillors unanimously approved plans to build a new housing estate in Hollyacre, off Toddington Lane.

The four-acre plot, which is currently not in use, but was previously used for horticulture and storage, is set to incorporate 16 affordable homes.

The development, submitted by Angmering-based developers, Wilmington Homes, would be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom detached, semi-detached and terrace houses.

During the meeting, held last Wednesday at the Civic Centre, in Maltravers Road, Littlehampton, councillors were mostly supportive of the designs.

However, concerns were raised by Brookfield ward councillor Joyce Bowyer, who felt there was insufficient safe parking provision.

She said future residents could flout parking regulations, leading to potentially life-threatening situations.

Cllr Bowyer called for pre-emptive action to be taken, in the form of a traffic regulation order (TRO), in an effort to avert potential accidents from occurring.

She said: “The road is narrow already, with lorries using Toddington Lane day in, day out.

“If there are cars parked there the lorries have to stop there because they can’t get past.

“We know there’s going to be a problem so what other measure can we put in place to make sure this doesn’t happen because what worries me intensely is that we have no footpath there and children potentially coming straight out onto the road and dodging in and out of parked cars.

“It’s a danger waiting to happen and all we’re being told is that it’s not a problem at the moment, you’ll have to wait. We must be able to do something.”
