Party marks Littlehampton orchard’s anniversary

Littlehampton’s mayor Joyce Bower, will be planting a mulberry tree at Maltravers Community Orchard on Friday, December 13.

The tree was kindly donated by the mayor after the original tree planted earlier this year was snapped and never recovered.

She will be joined in the Littlehampton orchard by chairman of Arun District Council, councillor Terence Chapman.

The public are invited to join the orchard members – affectionately known as ‘Malcoms’ – for the celebration at 11am.

Helping hands will be warmed afterwards with a free cup of tea or coffee!

The chairman, who is an honorary ‘Malcom’, said: “This is another great community project which has seen neighbours share the hard work necessary to get the orchard into such a great shape.

“But it’s not all soil and toil, I’ve been told there have been lots of laughs along the way.”

The community orchard in Maltravers Road was planted in December 2011 by pupils from the River Beach Primary School and local volunteers, with the help of Worthing and Arun Mind and the council’s parks department, with funding from Arun Well-being.
