Pavement crusade continues

CRUSADING pensioner Helen Alexander has vowed to continue her fight to make the route to her local Post Office safer for the elderly.

Last month, the Herald reported 75-year-old Mrs Alexander's quest to get the pavements along Franklin Road, in Durrington, tarmacked to finally put an end to the number of older people tripping and hurting themselves.

Since the story appeared, Mrs Alexander said she has been overwhelmed with phone calls and letters of support but she has still seen no sign of any improvements, despite a petition and lots of phone calls.

She told the Herald this week: "Two more ladies have been in touch with me saying they have fallen and hurt themselves.

"The situation is diabolical. Some pensioners are terrified to go out."

Nick Rodgers, borough councillor for Durrington, agreed the pavements needed serious attention.

He told the Herald he was also pushing for work to begin promptly.

"The work was delayed through the summer because the contractors couldn't get the tarmac to set in the hot weather.

"Improvements have been included in the budget for this financial year, which ends in April.

"It's not been forgotten and I will personally be pushing for the work to be done by the end of this financial year."

He added: "Franklin Road is awful.

"It should have been done at least four years ago. It's a horrible bit of pavement."
