Pavilion fact-finding under way

EXPLORATORY work has begun at the western end of the De La Warr Pavilion.

The work is necessary to break out exterior concrete cladding and reveal the steel structure beneath.

The western end of the pavilion including stage tower and part of the auditorium was badly shaken by a bomb during World War II.

Post-war repairs were done at a time of austerity and architect Adam Brown, of John McAslan and Partners, wants an accurate picture of the present condition of the pavilion's steel structure in this area before the bulk of the year-long refurbishment programme funding by 6m worth of Lottery grants can get underway.

The work will be offered for tender next month with refurbishment due to begin towards the end of June.
