If all work is completed on time, the event will be marked with a weekend of live music and dance.

A spokesman said the new foyer would be bright, fresh and welcoming and hold an information and booking desk.

Staff will be able to direct customers to the auditorium, art galleries, restaurant; and rooftop terrace with a panoramic view of the south coast.

Guests can purchase books, magazines, designer objects and souvenirs, unique to the pavilion, at the new De La Warr shop.

All areas of the pavilion will be accessible from the new lift.

Two new buildings will open later in the autumn, marking the completion of the second and final stage of the project.

One of the buildings will be an education centre and will be situated to the north of the Pavilion; the other building will be an office block and will open to the south.

On December 12, the world famous icon of the Modernist movement will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a gala evening.

A full programme of events for the opening weekend and the autumn season will be announced in the next few weeks.
