'˜Pay as you feel' hub for waste food in Brighton

The hub will be used as a community shop redistributing surplus food including fresh vegetables and tinned items to the community on a ‘pay as you feel basis’.

Shops, supermarkets and wholesalers have donated the produce either because it is past its best before date, its packaging is damage or because a pallet has been damaged in the warehouse.

Adam Buckingham, founder of The Real Junk Food Project, said: “This is a major step forward for us an organisation as we will be able to work with more supermarkets and food outlets, saving more food from going to waste and feeding even more people in our city.”

The Real Junk Food Project Brighton runs three cafes in the city where surplus food is turned into nutritious food for the community. The project, a volunteer-led organisation, saves around six tonnes of food every month and feeds up to 2,000 people a month.

The hub opened on May 19 at 13 Leybourne Parade, Bevendean, and aims to eventually open six days a week.
