The majority of voters in Brighton and Lewes elected to remain in the European Union and Mr Kirby acknowledges many will be disappointed following the national decision to leave.

He said: “When I stood for re-election last year in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, I promised that I would vote for a referendum to let the British people decide our future in Europe.

“I’ve kept my word and, whatever my personal views, I will respect and do my best to help implement this decision that the British public has made.

“No doubt many local people in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven will be disappointed with the result, having been part of the substantial Brighton and Hove and clear Lewes votes to remain. However, this was an individual vote and everyone had the opportunity to have their say.

“Now is the time for all of us to come together and for me to reassure constituents that I will continue to work hard both locally and in Westminster and be a loud voice for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven.”
