Mary Hitchins, 2 The Old Hop Gardens

Autumn would seem to have arrived. Everyone is back to school and the weather is rather chilly! I hope we get a few more warm days before it really gets cold!

My thanks to Jennifer Als for giving me this write up about the hall, I was disappointed that I was unable to attend this first Quiz - however I am definitely not going to miss the next one! I will let you know the date as soon as I know it.

The hall is gradually swinging into action. Thanks to the Sandersons and members of the Hall Committee over 40 people (aged 3 – 83) enjoyed a light-hearted quiz and a tasty ploughman’s and raised over £260 on Saturday evening. Those who came also had a chance of a “guided tour”

The building is completed, but this is still very much “work in progress” and if the committee wants to furnish the hall so that it offers a really broad range of facilities, fund-raising must continue. We are grateful for a generous donation from the Rother District Council Community Chest, and another from the charity box at Jempsons’ in addition to a promise from the Rye Bonfire Boys and several small personal donations in the last week.

Don’t forget that the “Grand Opening” will take place on Saturday October 12, so keep the afternoon free.

Half of our speedwatch volunteers have now attended training and the rest expect to do so this week. It is encouraging that we have such interest in this scheme, and that Peter Lamont has volunteered to be the co-ordinator.

Any children aged 7 – 12 who would enjoy a weekly singing practice on a Monday evening and would be willing to come and sing and ring handbells at the monthly Family Services in our 2 anglican churches (Peasmarsh and Beckley) should contact Jennifer Als (230324). It doesn’t matter where you live or go to school. The next Family Service will be at Peasmarsh on September 29.

The weather was kind to those who turned up at the churchyard last Sunday afternoon for the “Working Party” and anyone who visits the church will appreciate the tremendous amount of work that has been done over the whole of the last month to improve the graveyard. Thank you from the PCC, and anyone who has an interest in the churchyard, to all those who have contributed to this effort in any way.

The services at Peasmarsh church this Sunday 15 will be Holy Eucharist at 10am and Evensong at 3pm.
