This Bank Holiday Monday there will be a charity Boot Sale at Jempson’s in aid of the Rye and District Day Centre; please go along, grab some bargains and support this cause!

Also, on a more personal level, my son Ethan will be having his head shaved (!) on Bank Holiday Monday at around 8pm at the Horse and Cart in School Lane, in aid of Demelza Hospice Care for Children. I would agree that he needed a haircut but this is a bit extreme! All support for this worthwhile cause would be gratefully received, thank you.

My thanks to Jennifer Als for the following: “Onward Christian Soldiers” is not a hymn you hear very often these days, but Arthur Sullivan’s rousing march tune was just the thing for a sunny Sunday morning when the 9th Purley Scouts, camping at Beckley, joined the congregation for the morning service at Peasmarsh last week. The group brought their colours, explored the churchyard, applauded the bellringers, rang the sanctus bell, and stayed for a drink and biscuits and a chat after the service while some of them learnt how a pipe organ works. This summer visit is now becoming a regular thing and it is a great joy to welcome these friendly young people and their leaders.

Passers-by can now see how close the Memorial Hall is to completion, and it is expected that the handover will be at the end of next week. If you want to find out more about availability and bookings, visit www.peasmarshmh.org.uk. The first Peasmarsh Quiz in the new hall will be on Saturday September 7 at 7.30pm. As usual the £5.50 charge will include a ploughman’s supper, and there will be a raffle. Bring your own drinks. Nearly 10 years ago a village wish-list for the hall included a medical unit, short mat bowls, internet facilities with broadband and a mother and baby unit. The Hall Committee hopes that within the next year all these will become available along with the facilities we already enjoy, Brownies, Guides, Zumba etc. and with the addition of a lunch club and possible regular bingo sessions.

Thank you to 2 generous donors who responded very quickly to last week’s appeal for support for a fund to help to maintain the churchyard. Several residents have also been heard to say they would be willing to give some time to work there. Please don’t be shy. The service this Sunday at Peasmarsh church will be Holy Eucharist at 3pm.
