Peasmarsh

Mary Hitchins

2 The Old Hop Gardens

A big, big thank you to all those people living in Peasmarsh who responded to the Link Romania Christmas appeal by filling shoe boxes for needy families in Romania, Moldova, Albania, Bulgaria and the Ukraine.

Children at Peasmarsh Primary School have also filled shoe boxes. Sue Cavilla, who collected the shoe boxes on behalf of the charity Link Romania, said how pleased she was with the generous response to the appeal shown by the children, parents and staff and she thanked Mr McMillan, the headteacher for his support.

On October 10 the young people of Peasmarsh (13 and over) were invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the new Youth project in the village, run by James and Julia of Youth in Motion who had been invited to undertake the project by the Parish Council.

This first meeting was attended by over 20 young people who liked what they heard and are very keen for this project to continue. Meetings at the pavilion at the Maltings are now approaching their 4th week, and the half-term meeting on October 31st will be at an earlier time to allow for some outdoor activities.Youth in Motion are a not for profit organization that specialises in youth and community work across the south east of England. They were formed in response to the governments cuts around the delivery of youth work and the ending of some of the most vulnerable youth clubs around the rural and urban areas of the south east. If you would like to know more about them have a look at their website: http://youthinmotion.org.uk .

The hall has been cleared, the activities have all moved elsewhere, the builders are moving in ! Equipment and furniture has been stored in a number of extraordinary places. Even the storage shed has vanished overnight ! Peasmarshians find it hard to believe that this is happening at last, and our lovely old Memorial Hall (1921) is to get the refurbishment it so desperately needs to become a community centre for the 21st century. The Hall Committee would like to say a big thank you to all those volunteers who helped to clear the hall and prepare for the work to be done, and to all the users who have been so co-operative over the move to the pavilion

The Guides and Brownies, the Youth Project, the Zumba classes, the “Sing for Fun” sessions, the dog trainers, the various committee meetings have all moved down the road to share the facilities of the sports pavilion with the Saturday Football team, the Beckley under-15s and the Bowls Club while the work goes on. The exception is the Parish Council who can hardly share a room with the Guides on a Tuesday night and are grateful for the generous offer of the lounge at the Flackley Ash hotel for their monthly meetings. Members of the public will be welcome at Parish Council meetings as usual. The next meeting is at 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 6.

The Brownies have been meeting in the hall since 1965! Together with the Guides they said it all on the banners they left on the wall after their last meeting: “Good bye Old Hall !” “Good luck New Hall !” Amen to that.

Friends of Peasmarsh Parish Church were happy to welcome Cranbrook Town Band back to the church on October 11 where they entertained a delighted audience with a wonderful mixture of brass band music. Patrons enjoyed hot soup and savoury rolls and a visit to the bar before the concert. FOPPC would like to express their thanks to the Band, some of whom came from considerable distances, and who came free of charge to support the Friends’ fund-raising efforts.

Electing a Police and Crime Commissioner - This election will take place on Thursday, November 15. Due to the fact that the Memorial Hall will not be available the Polling Station for Peasmarsh will be the Sports Pavilion at the Recreation Ground, The Maltings. Please take the trouble to go and cast your vote for a Commissioner for Sussex.
