I received the following from Parish councillor Peter Wareham: remembering Charlie Piggott - I knew Charlie and Betty for many years, my first memory was of Charlie riding into Peasmash on his motorbike, long beard flowing, and Betty tucked into the sidecar. He arrived like a prophet from the East - Iden actually! He was a member of our community bringing skills from boat building to general building and decorating work, in his own inimitable and unique way. Who could forget his “mobile workshop and paint store” the Ford estate car he used? His love for and love of wildlife was there for all to see; he would talk wisely and selflessly about country ways and traditions. He was a great patriot and one if not the first to fly the Union Jack - the right way up of course! Charlie is no longer with us, his flag at half mast. Our thoughts must now be with Phillip and Charlie’s family. Thanks for the memories, I will miss you. God bless you Charlie. Charlie’s funeral is at 2.30pm on April 4 at Peasmarsh church.

The new Sing for Fun group that started on March 6,is now open to all ages! The session runs from 2pm to 3.30pm each Tuesday; everyone welcome, just turn up or phone Yvonne on 01797 230693 for further details.

It has been brought to the attention of the group who organise the Peasmarsh Periodical that there are residents of Rye Foreign (particularly those at the western end) who would like to receive copies of this newsletter. There is a limit to the extent to which it is possible the hand-deliver this newsletter, but there are already Rye Foreign residents who receive it by email, and copies are posted out to some outlying properties in Peasmarsh. It is easy to send it online. Please send your request to [email protected] or to [email protected] . If you are not online and would like a copy delivered or posted please call 230324 or 230205. We may need to ask you for a small donation towards the postage. Please don’t contact us if you already have a copy delivered. Arrangements are already in place to ensure that our neighbours in Rye Foreign get a copy of the May issue with details of all our Jubilee celebrations.

Jubilee plans are moving forward. During the afternoon of June 2nd we shall have Sussex Brass playing for us. There will be a “Fun” Dog Show with classes for all your favourite pooches, followed by a Doggie Demo of either agility or dancing; Fancy Dress Competition (Red white and blue, of course) for all primary age children; Rye Dance will be putting on a display as will a team of Majorettes; there will be the usual stalls and sideshows and a tea-party for all Peasmarsh 12-and-unders. This will all be followed by our annual Morris Dancer visitors. In the evening Synergy will take over responsibility for the music and there will be a licensed bar and a barbecue. The Jubilee Committee is delighted to have welcomed younger members of the community to their last meeting and hope to see more of you.

As anyone living near the Maltings can see a great deal of hard work went on at the pavilion over the weekend. A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped. It was a wonderful sunny day and now the whole place looks completely different. It’s difficult to start naming names, but special credit to Darren for his assistance on the roof, and to Luke who worked non-stop on both days and to the gentleman from the Maltings who was unable to help us paint, but came to offer a donation toward the paint. Unfortunately we didn’t have a big enough team to complete all the work we planned, but nevertheless a great deal has been achieved.

This Sunday (Palm Sunday) the services at Peasmarsh church will be Holy Eucharist at 10am (with distribution of palms), and Evensong at 3.30pm.
