Pedalling for safe children

A SOMPTING man is using pedal power to raise money for the British Safety House Association.

Colin Bowyer, of Nelson Drive, will be cycling the 56-mile journey around the Isle of Wight on Sunday, September 8.

He will be travelling in a clockwise direction from Fishbourne and will be joined by his seven-year-old son, Ryan Beeston, for the last 10 miles.

"He's actually done a lot of training," said Mr Bowyer. "We think he might even do 15 miles."

Mr Bowyer is a park keeper at Buckingham Park, Shoreham, and decided to undertake the mammoth journey after meeting Trisha Porter, from the association, at an event in the park, organised in memory of the murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne back in June.

The British Safety House Association is building up a national network of safe houses for children to go to if they feel threatened by strangers.

They hope to have at least one house in every street, eventually.
