Conrad Ryle, chairman of PPCA, and Phil Ranlsey, pool manager, told the Express they were surprised and disappointed when they saw the government announcement on plans for further reopening the UK from July 4, to see that swimming pools were specifically excluded from the plans.

They said: “The guidance that had been generated in recent weeks by both the Royal Life Savings Society (RLSSUK) and Swim England should have allowed for the safe opening of pools, with effective social distancing and health and safety arrangements in place for swimmers and staff.

“And at the Pells we were prepared for this to happen from July 4, if it had been allowed by the government.”

The pair said they would have had a number of safety measures in place, including carefully controlled numbers, pre-bought ticketed access only, social distancing, cleaning regimes and safe lifeguarding arrangements.

“In our view, this means we would be a safer and more well managed space than some other facilities that are now being allowed to open,” they added.

They confirmed the community association was continuing to link up with other pools and providers across the country to ‘add its voice to those who have suggested that swimming – and especially outdoor pools – should be an important part of how local communities are given healthy activities and outdoor spaces for their mental health and positive, safe socialisation’.

Mr Ryle and Mr Ranlsey said they have sadly had to postpone the Volunteers’ Weekend activities that were due to take place this weekend.

They reminded supporters that their kiosk is still open for ice creams and drinks, from noon-5:30pm on days when the weather is nice.

The pair suggested a number of steps their supporters could take, such as signing the Swim England petition, writing to the local MP and sharing their concerns politely on social media.

They added: “As soon as we hear any more, and can plan to re-open, we will let you know. We hope to be able to update you with better news soon.”
