Penny drops for Rye’s new mayor

A BIG crowd turned out to take part in Rye’s traditional mayor-making celebrations on Monday.

A large group of children, including some young Continental visitors, enjoyed scrambling for the hot pennies that newly elected mayor Shaun Rogers cascaded from an upper window of the Town Hall to Market Street.

Cllr Bernardine Fiddimore was, as expected, made the new deputy mayor.

Good weather led to an estimated crowd of 200 people who packed into Market Street to watch the historic celebrations.

They were treated to Rye pageantry at its finest with the new mayor and fully robed and wigged councillors and attendants making their way to Mermaid Street for a mayoral lunch at the Mermaid Inn.
