The man was strolling along the embankment of the River Arun, near Ferry Road, when he slipped into the thick mud below, yesterday evening (Thursday, September 5).

A crew from Littlehampton arrived at the scene at 7.27pm to assist the stranded pensioner.

“When the crew arrived they found the elderly male exhausted and trapped in thick mud three metres from the river bank” said a spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue. “The tide in the river was out and there wasn’t much water. He was very tired.”

Fire crews used rope lines to pull the stranded male to safety – and to reunite him with his anxious dog.

The man was checked by paramedics but was found to be in good health, if not a little tired from the evening’s drama.

He was transported to Worthing Hospital as a precaution.
