People power has won the day for Oakwood Drive, Uckfield, residents.
From this weekend Wealden District Council plan to remove up to 30 dangerous leylandii trees which damaged homes and cars during recent storms.
Cabinet member Cllr Ann Newton said: “Strong winds and waterlogged soil led to fallen trees and branches in recent months forcing the Council to act to protect the property of residents. The overgrown trees have been an eyesore for some time but because the ownership of the land has been put into receivership, it has been difficult for the Council to deal with the situation through enforcement procedures. We have monitored the situation and removed dangerous branches but severe weather has exacerbated the situation, making it imperative for the Council to use its statutory powers to ensure that safety will not be put at risk.” Contractor PJ Chaffin begins work on March 31. Resident Steve Barton said: “I feel that publicity helped us no end in prompting the council to finally, after years, make sure we are safe from future damage.”
