Serena, 17, tested positive for coronavirus in October but, thankfully, her symptoms were quite mild and she has made a full recovery.

Moved by stories in the news about NHS staff being completely overwhelmed as a result of the pandemic, she decided to do something to help, like the late Captain Tom.

She said: “I was motivated to set myself a challenge having read so much about the doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers who were working round the clock to save lives and help people overcome Covid-19. Their stories on the news, as well Captain Sir Tom’s amazing achievements, really inspired me to make a difference.

“I thought about what I could do and decided to run 100km in 25 days, in 10km stretches, in between studying for my A-levels online at home, to raise money for NHS Charities Together.

“I have enjoyed the challenge but at times it’s been tough as I usually run 5km and below. Until now, I had never run 10km in one stretch.

“It’s also been really muddy around us and my trainers will be ready for the bin! Everyone’s generosity has spurred me on throughout the challenge, especially one friend who said they would double their donation if I ran my personal best. I’m getting faster with this in mind.”

Serena started off wanting to raise £1,000. Within 24 hours, people had generously donated and so she increased her target to £2,000 and then to £3,000, which has also just been passed.

She said: “I can’t believe how kind and supportive everyone has been.”
