Army of Lewes volunteers help keep families in need fed for six weeks during coronavirus crisis

Lewes Coronavirus Volunteers (LCV) set up to provide essential support in tough times has benefited from a surge in volunteers and donations.

They have volunteers from sports clubs, town councillors, bonfire societies and vicars. Items collected this week are estimated to last families in need for six weeks. All donations are handled via the emergency Foodbank Hub, run by Trinity churches.

Latest numbers of volunteers in Lewes now stand at more than 650 individuals and more than 400 tasks have already been undertaken to provide essential provisions, medicines, and other deliveries to those who are self-isolating during this time.

Emma Amies, LCV founder, said: “It continues to be uplifting to see the level of volunteering and generosity of local people in these challenging times.

“We have had so many offers of help that we are now moving across to a new database which was developed in Seaford to enable us to allocate even more tasks. Local volunteers and vital donations are providing a lifeline for people through the pandemic lockdown.”
