Together with John Myers, the head gardener of Fairlight Hall, Andy Hawkins, the head gardener of the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the Kowitz Family Fund, and the Friends of Conquest Hospital, the team has started work on the project which aims to have a long-lasting impact on patients, visitors and staff.

The courtyards - which form a vital part of the fabric for the hospital - have slipped into disuse and repair.

The project aims to lift spirits at the Conquest Hospital and in the NHS which has been hit so hard during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mike Eastwood, from the Friends of Conquest Hospital, said: "We’re doing this because gardens and gardening have a huge impact on health and well-being and whilst more normally thought of as intimate private spaces attached to private households or formal gardens open to the public, they are also play an important part in hospitals.

"The Kings Fund and World Health Organisation have both suggested that green space help support mental health and wellbeing and reduce physiological stress. The environment around us is important; plants and green spaces improve our health and wellbeing and support recovery after illness – this is especially important in a hospital.

"It’s not just patients who’ll benefit as the gardens will also offer a calm and tranquil place for contemplation, relaxation, physical activity, social interaction and community for staff and visitors."

Professional designers have been asked to submit a design for the courtyards, which reflect the courtyard's specific use. If you are a professional gardener and would like to participate contact Mike Eastwood, mike@conquestlof.org.uk.

If you would like to join the team of volunteers, please contact Cathy by calling 0300 131 3569, extsension: 773569 or by emailing: esh-tr.voluntaryservices-hastings@nhs.net.

Mike added: "We have some funds to turn the brilliant designs we’ve received into reality but sadly not enough. So, we are giving sponsors a range of opportunities to be at the heart of the Hospital. Sponsors can make a general donation to the overall project or, on application, may select a design or courtyard of their choice to support. We intend to organise regular courtyard tours for the general public and so there will be many ongoing opportunities for your support to be recognised. Contact Mike Eastwood, mike@conquestlof.org.uk

"Donation towards the courtyards would be hugely appreciated too. Every few pennies can buy more plants and materials to bring these once beautiful courtyards back into use for all to enjoy. You can make a donation, online at www.conquestlof.org.ul/conquest21 or post a cheque, made out to The Friends of Conquest Hospital, addressed to Conquest 21 Garden Appeal, The Friends of Conquest, Conquest Hospital. The Ridge, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0SU."
