“Ray’s mum Mrs Nora Laxton and some lovely neighbours did our lovely reception in the local hall.

“I was working in Deans rag book and Teddy bear factory in Rye at the time and Ray was working on a farm in Northiam.

“We’ve been married for 60 years and are still happy together, living in lovely Bexhill the last 27 years, which we love.”

Asked about the secret of such a long marriage, Ray said: “The recipe for a happy marriage is give and take on both sides, care about each other and take interest in what each other does.

“Having similar interests is also helpful. We still love each other, even more now. We have been through good times and bad.

“We’ve brought up our lovely family, two children. We have six grandchildren, all grown up now, and two great grandchildren. We are proud of them all.

“We both love animals, gardening, countryside, our dog gets lots of walks, and we play football with him.

“We were unable to do anything for our special day but we will keep smiling and have a party with family and friends later on.”
