Bexhill mum who made and gave away face masks receives a community award

Nina received the Thriving Communities Award from housing company Orbit.

The Brian Griffiths Award recognises Orbit clients who have overcome significant social barriers and have transformed their lives and has made positive changes. The public voted online for the winners in July.

Nina is a single mum who has been working with an Orbit employment and skills coach to improve her job prospects for the future.

She has been selling pre-labelled jars and home storage solutions. She wanted to become self-employed because this gave her the freedom to be there for her child while also being a good role model for them.

Nina has also been making face masks, with three-layers of material, a nose mould and extendable ear straps.

Nina said: “I couldn’t believe I had won. Getting short-listed was amazing but to actually win, by a public vote, means so much to me. I want to be a good role model for my child and being self-employed will show them that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

The Thriving Communities Awards celebrate Orbit customers and partners who go the extra mile to make a contribution to their local area or who have made a positive impact on their own lives.

Nina received a trophy and £1,000 in vouchers from Orbit to invest in her growing business. Last year, Orbit invested £5.7m into communities.
