Chief Inspector Jon Carter, district commander for Arun and Chichester, said: “Officers investigating the tragic circumstances of Jake’s death recovered a letter, left by Jake at his home address. I was very sorry to learn that the family were not made aware of this until the inquest; this was an administrative error and should not have happened.

“We will review police and coronial processes for any learning and the coroner’s officer has been in contact with the family to convey our sincere apologies for the upset that this may have caused. My thoughts remain with the Harding family at this very difficult time.”

Jake's mum, Laura Britton, said family and friends were left 'devastated' by the revelation.

She added: "This error is so wrong in so many ways.
