The series of photographs were published in September and tell the tale of the three months of lockdown in an ordinary Lewes street.

Entitled Our Street In Lockdown, the book has been a great success with families in South Street and Malling Street and has just gone on sale to the public in Bags-of-Books in Lewes. Sales of the book include a donation to Lewes Coronavirus Volunteers, who helped thousands of families in Lewes during the virus with shopping, errands and mental health support.

The book documents the strong community response.

Photographer Steve Lewis who lives in South Street, Lewes, made this photo-series. He says there was an active effort to help each other. Some of the portraits of neighbours who were most at risk, are taken through the windows.

Steve said: “The windows symbolise the way we were all separated from our friends and families. The glass kept us physically safe, but emotionally and socially isolated.”

He explained the community spirit in his street during lockdown.

He said: “People have done shopping, bought asparagus, shared out rhubarb, and played music. Every day at 3pm there has been music and dancing in the street. That kept our morale high.”
