Bourne Community College’s new STEM Centre officially opened

Bourne Community College’s new STEM Centre was officially opened by Chichester MP Gillian Keegan on Friday (October 9).

The school has invested in a new building with five new teaching spaces, with two food technology spaces, two maths classroom and a state-of-the-art STEM classroom which will help develop key skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Yvonne Watkins, headteacher at Bourne Community College, said: “Our aim is to advance the education of all students at the Bourne Community College by providing the best resources and improving facilities at the college.

“We were therefore delighted last Friday, to have our local MP Gillian Keegan with us to officially open our brand-new facility dedicated to the areas of expertise for the STEM subjects, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), as we expand our school.

“The new building includes five new purpose-built classrooms, two for food technology and two maths and one specifically for STEM.

“This room is fully equipped with facilities for Computing and Engineering using 3D printers and CNC machining to enable the students to build and compete in many areas including robotics, The Greenpower racing car project and our local drone challenge.

“We are also excited with our new AstroTurf pitch, which was also officially opened on Friday. We know this will not only benefit the school community but local sporting groups too.”

Bourne is part of the STEM partnership which infuses the arts and creativity into traditional STEM subjects.

Mrs Keegan said: “It was brilliant to open the new STEM department at Bourne Community College.

“The skills students learn there will help them move into the careers of the future.

“I was hugely impressed by the facilities they have put in place, which will ensure every student has the opportunity to gain the talent needed across industry and the economy, making them more valuable as they continue their study and enter the workplace.

“All the students I met were clearly passionate and excited to learn all the subjects on offer, which is a testament to the inspiring teaching staff at the school.”

Bourne Community College has been also been raising awareness and exploring barriers to mental health and wellbeing through tutor time activities and wearing or making yellow accessories, which is helping to foster a more positive mental health culture in our school.
