Brighton secondary school teachers turn to yoga to help them get ready to support returning pupils
Last week PE teachers from eight of Brighton and Hove’s Secondary Schools attended an online CPD Training session with local Yoga in Education specialist Tamsin from Sprite Yoga. The training was supported by Brighton and Hove Council’s Public Health Schools Team.
Although teachers missed out on being in a room together they were keen to learn how they might use some of the benefits of yoga with their young people and took part in a practical session via zoom.

Hannah Martin, of Hove Park, said: “It will raise confidence and self-esteem whilst maintaining social distancing measures.”
Rob Cornell, of Kings School, said: “It was great to go through it practically and get loads of ideas for when we are back in September. I also nearly fell asleep during the relaxation session!”
Tamsin is passionate about the benefits of yoga for young people and aims to make it accessible, age appropriate and fun. At a time when many teenagers may find themselves overwhelmed yoga can teach them to relax, slow down, focus on the present. Just one hour’s yoga per week has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety.

She hopes that as social distancing measures are lifted schools will bring more yoga specialists in to their schools to support young people with their physical and mental well-being.
