Calls are being made for a 20mph speed limit to be introduced on roads in villages around Horsham.

A petition has been drawn up urging West Sussex County Council to impose the speed limits in Storrington, Sullington, Cootham and Cowfold.

The petition – said to have strong community support – states that curbing traffic speed “would be a vital step in addressing the volume, speed, and type of traffic in two of the most traffic-stressed areas in the Horsham district.” See bit.ly/407I8HJ

The petition goes on: “A 20mph limit in Storrington, as a hub village serving surrounding communities including Thakeham, Ashington, Pulborough, West Chiltington, Amberley, Coldwaltham, and Washington, would also bring indirect benefits to these areas.

"The smoother traffic flow resulting from a 20mph limit would reduce congestion and enhance the experience for those travelling through or accessing Storrington for essential services and activities.

“Both Storrington and Cowfold are designated Air Quality Management Areas due to consistently poor air quality caused by high traffic levels. Storrington sees over 500,000 vehicles passing through each month, with up to 40 per cent exceeding speed limits.

"Cowfold experiences even higher volumes, with 650,000 vehicles monthly and around 10 per cent (60,000 vehicles) speeding.

“These statistics underscore the urgent need for interventions to reduce speed, improve air quality, and create safer, more livable environments in our villages.”
