Car park in Lewes fully reopened ahead of schedule after ‘extensive repair work’

A popular car park in Lewes is open once again following ‘extensive repair work’.

Lewes District Council has announced that Westgate Car Park fully reopened on Tuesday, October 22, which is earlier than scheduled.

The council said the car park was closed because of the ‘shifting’ of the historic flint Town Wall at Westgate Street in 2023. They said ‘emergency shoring-up’ was needed, and said further investigation showed additional risks of the wall collapsing at various points.

Councillor Nick Kortalla-Bird, Castle Ward, said: “The reopening of Westgate Car Park is cause for celebration, both for residents and businesses. The timing is particularly welcome as Westgate Street forms part of the Lewes Borough Bonfire Society procession route. It also means local businesses will benefit from a full complement of parking spaces throughout the Christmas shopping period.”

Councillor Wendy Maples, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Well-Being, said: "I would like to thank the highly skilled professionals who carried out this specialist work to ensure the safety of local people while protecting the aesthetic of our beautiful Town Wall.”
