Tom Garfield, of the The Academy Selsey, has been named Chichester District Head Teacher of the Year.

Tom took over as Head just before a devastating fire destroyed 75% of the school buildings. He worked tirelessly to ensure continuity of learning and, within days of relocating to the new building, the school achieved a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating for the first time in the history of the Academy.

Nuala Field, of Medmerry Primary School, was named Teaching Assistant of the Year. Judges said that Nuala is the school’s SEND Teaching Assistant and has a special ability to make children feel safe and valued. Her timetable is crammed with interventions for individuals and groups of children, and she is constantly in demand for additional support outside of school hours – which she willingly provides.

Robert Uffold, of Camelsdale Primary School is School Maths Volunteer of the Year. As a retired Secondary School Deputy Head and Mathematics specialist, Robert is ideally placed to provide first-class Maths support for Years 1 and 6. Every morning, he inspires the children with his expert subject knowledge and enthusiasm. It is no surprise the school’s Maths results continue to improve year on year.

Morag Dalton, also from Camelsdale Primary School, was named as School Literacy Volunteer of the Year. Judges said: “Morag turns up to school every Wednesday afternoon to listen to the children practise their reading. As a former Special Needs Teaching Assistant,

“Morag is very skilful in helping the children and they delight in spending time with her. She has undoubtedly contributed to the school’s excellent results for reading.”
