The group, named the Byworth Bakers, is made up of ten year olds Rosie Davies and Connie O’Connell and seven-year-old twins Xander and Rory O’Connell.

The generous quartet spent six hours baking at their homes in Byworth and went on to sell their goods to hungry villagers, raking in a total of £300 for Petworth Cottage Nursing Home, which was £300 short of buying a £7,000 activity table for its residents.

Alexandra Davis, Rosie’s mum, said she is ‘unbelievably proud’ of the group, adding: “They worked very hard and baked for six hours and did some leafleting to advertise the sale.

“They thought they would make about £20. It was a lovely thing they did.”

Alexandra said she will be turning the cash into a cheque to hand to the care home.

The donation came as a surprise to Christopher Hubbard, who owns the care home.

Mr Hubbard said: “I was absolutely overwhelmed by it. It did bring a tear to the eye, to see them learning the art of giving at such a young age.

“I really think it’s this sort of thing that helps the world go round.”

He has since written a letter to the children to thank them for their hard work and generosity and invited them to visit the care home once lockdown measures have been eased.

The group will be able to see the table they helped to fundraise for.

The letter concludes: “Bravo the Byworth Bakers.”
