Father Christmas and his Christmas Float will still come to Bognor Regis this year – though his visit will be a little different than usual.

In order to abide by coronavirus restrictions, the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham said the Christmas float will carry out ‘non-stop drive-bys’ on selected street routes.

At no point will the float be permitted to stop or make bucket collections.

Static displays of Father Christmas and his Sleigh will also be held at selected locations, such as local supermarkets.

A spokesman said: “We know at the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham how much enjoyment the Christmas Float brings to young and old.

“We know also the gratitude of those in need locally who have been helped by Float collections and the generosity of local people.

“Although we cannot tour and collect with buckets in the traditional ways we are determined to bring as much normality and fun to Christmas as possible.”

As the club will be unable to make essential bucket collections in the normal way, people are being encouraged to donate online via the website or Facebook page.

The spokesman said: “Collections and donations are immensely important to those people locally who are in need of a little financial help through illness or hardship.

“Please enter into the spirit of Christmas and again show your generosity by visiting our website and Facebook pages and making a small donation.

“We are immensely proud of the help you have given in the past, those in need are immensely grateful for your generosity.”

Father Christmas and his Christmas Float have visited the town every year for the last 30 years, the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham said.

More than £10,000 has been collected annually and used to help those disadvantaged by hardship or illness locally.
