Closure of Hastings cemetery upsets families unable to visit loved ones

The recent closure of Hastings cemetery and crematorium due to social distancing measures has been met with disappointment from those who had planned to visit loved ones buried there.

Dawne Braine’s son died shortly after birth eight years ago and said she and her family still go to his grave regularly.

She had planned to visit on his birthday, in May, but due to the Ministry of Justice’s decision to close all crematoria, except for funerals, Dawne may not be able to.

The decision means people will not be able to visit graves or any memorials within the grounds of the crematorium and cemetery.

The Hastings cemetery and crematorium, located on The Ridge and operated by Hastings Borough Council, has been closed until further notice.

Describing the decision as ‘senseless’, Dawne said it is likely to impact the mental wellbeing of those unable to visit loved ones.

“It seems remarkably stupid,” said Dawne, adding the cemetery attracts few visitors and usually all from the same household.

She added: “This will affect so many and I think it needs to be addressed.”

A spokesman for Hastings Borough Council said: “The grounds of this cemetery are now closed to the general public until further notice due to the Government’s social distancing measures.

“Only people attending a crematorium or burial ceremony can enter the cemetery and crematorium.

“We are sorry for the distress this will cause people who want to visit the grave of a loved one.

“We hope that you understand why we must all strictly obey these new temporary rules.
