Craig Vit, landlord and chef at The Cricketers Arms in Wisborough Green, was surprised when police questioned him about ‘gatherings’ outside his pub.

“Someone called the police anonymously and said they had seen several people sitting outside drinking,” said Craig. “It so incensed me that someone was saying those things.

“I have got nothing to hide. I’ve done nothing wrong.”

He said he had stuck firmly to the Covid guidelines and had been shielding.

The pub was abiding by all regulations and currently providing only a takeaway meal service. “The only person who has been inside the pub is the lady in my support bubble,” he said.

He said he occasionally chatted outside to friends passing by, but nothing more. “This is also my home so if I wish to sit outside, I will do,” he said.

And villagers have been quick to support him. Many have taken to social media demanding of the ‘informant’: “What is wrong with people?”

One said: “Some people really must have such empty lives.”

And another added: “For someone who did so much for others during lockdown and making families happy over Christmas! It’s sad someone has done this.”

The angry villagers have nothing but praise for Craig, who has run the Cricketers for the past 15 years.

“The customers are so good,” said Craig. “They are very supportive.”
