The gallery in Devonshire Park says it has taken the decision to close from 5pm today (March 18) after government advice.

During this period exhibitions, cinema and events programme – both on and off-site – will not go ahead as planned.

Anyone who has booked tickets for an exhibition, film or event will be contacted with details of refund options.

However, director Joe Hill has asked people to support the gallery and suggested people waive the refund if possible.

He said in a statement, “We also ask you to be mindful of the impact that COVID-19 will have on Towner as a charity and encourage you to consider making a donation to help support us during this extremely difficult period.

“If you have booked a ticket you may wish to consider waiving your refund and turning it into a donation, a generous gesture which would be very welcome.

“We thank you for your support and understanding and very much look forward to welcoming you back to Towner Eastbourne in the not too distant future.”

The Towner says it remains committed to its role as a valuable community resource and will explore ways to ‘connect with and inspire everyone’ digitally.
