Could you give a black cat a happy home? Call to help 43 monochrome moggies

A Sussex charity is desperately looking for new owners for 43 unwanted black and black-and-white cats.

Staff at the Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre in Lewes Road, Chelwood Gate, say nearly 40 per cent of all cats currently in its care are black or black and white – colours which often lose out to more colourful cats when it comes to finding a new home.

The centre will be hosting its annual Black Cat Day on Sunday November 1 to raise the plight of the monochrome moggies, which tend to wait around a week longer than other cats to be rehomed.

Tania Marsh, Deputy Manager of Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre, said: “We always struggle to find homes for black and black-and-white cats and this year has been no different. Ginger and tabby cats seem to find homes more easily, yet there is no difference apart from the colour of their fur.

“We have some really wonderful black and black-and-white cats in our care who are bursting with fun and have so much love and companionship to offer. It’s heartbreaking to see them passed by time and time again.

“Witches and Hallowe’en are often associated with black cats so we’re hoping this October will mark a change in their luck and that anyone thinking of adopting will come and meet the black cats in our care.”

Some of the black or black-and-white cats currently being cared for at Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre are:

Both aged five years old, this affectionate pair came into the centre because their owner was going into care and could no longer keep them. They need a home where they can stay together, with no other cats or dogs.

Billy Boy:

Four-year-old Billy Boy has been at the centre since August. He is a shy cat who will need a patient and understanding owner to coax him out of his shell.

Minnie:

Poppy:

Seven-year-old Poppy has been at the centre since May and now desperately needs a new home. She needs a quiet home, without children, where she can be the centre of attention.
