Council to fly Rainbow flag against homophobia

A rainbow flag will be flown again by West Sussex County Council later this week to support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The multi-coloured banner will be hung from its buildings on Friday May 17 to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

The worldwide event was launched a decade ago to stop discrimination, harassment and bullying

The County Council, which has flown the rainbow flag since 2010, was named in the UK’s top 100 LGBT-friendly employers last year by gay rights organisation Stonewall.

The authority has also worked with young people at Worthing-based charity Blueprint 22 to produce images on their feelings of sexuality.

West Sussex Conservative Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “The County Council will be flying the rainbow flag to show our support for all LGBT communities.

“It is also a good chance to demonstrate how we are opposed to all forms of discrimination, harassment, bullying, and hate crime.”
