The National Literacy Trust and Hastings Hub have joined forces with author Lesley Parr to challenge children ages seven to eleven to produce a creative writing piece as a part of the Connecting Stories campaign.

Children can submit their writing in any format whether it is a story, poem, news article or diary entry, as long as it follows the theme, discovery - inspired by Lesley’s book Valley of the Lost Secrets.

Lesley wants children to imagine their characters find something shocking or unusual in an ordinary place, including details of what it is, where it is and who finds it.

As part of bringing the Connecting Stories campaign to Hastings, publisher Bloomsbury will be donating books to children across Hastings.

Also, Lesley Parr and Michelle Robinson will champion creative writing in Hastings throughout the year by participating in virtual school events and promoting various literacy related activities.

A National Literacy Trust spokesperson said: “School closures as a result of COVID-19 are expected to reverse all progress made to narrow the attainment gap in the last decade.

“Connecting Stories is our way of supporting children’s literacy in communities suffering disproportionately from the impact of COVID-19.

“It encourages children and young people to read or to take part in creative writing, both of which support their wellbeing.”

Everyone who enters the competition will receive a certificate and will have a chance to get their work published in an anthology and displayed in a local exhibition. There will also be book prizes for the winning entries.

Winning entries will be chosen based on originality, imagination, relation to the theme and overall enjoyment.

The closing date for submissions is March 12.
