Most men celebrate their 78th birthday relaxing and taking it easy, but Daring Derek Reynolds, a member of Billingshurst & District Lions Club, decided to celebrate with a Sky Dive, raising money for Brain Tumour Research (BTR), in memory of Derek and Helen’s daughter Amanda, who sadly died 10 years ago at the age of 41.

The Tandem Sky Dive was successfully completed at EGKH Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent on Saturday, 8th June 2024, organised by the specialist company GoSkydive. Derek was one of 50 divers taking part that day with 10, including Derek as the eldest, raising money for Brain Tumour Research.

It took 15 minutes for the aircraft to reach an altitude of 12,000 feet. Six ‘Divers’ were attached to an instructor who pushed them to doors on either side, before diving feet first and then taking up a frog like pose, free falling 6000 feet in 40 seconds, reaching a speed of around 120 mph. The dive then took a further five and a half minutes after the instructor deployed the parachute.

Four solo divers filmed the whole proceedings from climbing aboard until landing, recording conversations during the descent, with Derek saying at one stage, “Absolutely amazing, you’ve got to do it to appreciate it” and after landing, “I thought it was incredible. I will remember this day as one of the most exciting I have ever had and enjoyed every minute”.

The Lion BTR Foundation was initiated by Billingshurst & District Lions Club, lead by the late Ken Johnson, following not only Derek and Helens loss, but with other members experiencing similar issues. The foundation was later adopted by the local Lions District 105SE and now has become a Lion National charity embracing all Clubs in the UK.

Derek is a Trustee of the Foundation and, as shown by his daring Skydive at the age of 78, he dedicates much of his time to fundraising and, in connection with this dive alone, he has personally raised over £6,100.00. Brain Tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. They kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Brain Tumour Research is dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into this terrible disease.
