Do your bit to make life more bearable for the city's homeless.

Brighton and Hove residents have the chance to make good use of their post-Christmas downtime and support the city's rough sleepers.

Rotary in Brighton and Hove and the Portslade-based homeless charity Emmaus have teamed up to help the homeless by giving out bags of essential items and a small gift, and are calling on keen sewers to make 100 draw-string bags.

The bags will hopefully make life on the street just a little more bearable in the depths of winter.

Jane Thomson, from Brighton Rotary said: “Emmaus Brighton & Hove can provide the fabric to make these bags, but we really need your help to make them.

“Bags need to be approximately 14” x 14” square in plain fabric.

“If you have never made a drawstring bag before, there are lots of tutorial’s available on the web, just search ‘How to make a draw string bag’.

“My niece gave out a few rucksacks last Christmas and I was so inspired by her initiative I asked our members to support it this winter.

“We do need some other things though - wetwipes, chocolate etc, which we are asking you all to donate as well.”

The men’s bags need the following: A toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, shaving foam, socks, deodorant, wet wipes, chocolate, while the women’s bags need: A toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary pads, hairbrush, body spray, deodorant, wet wipes, chocolate.

Joel Lewis, business manager for Emmaus Brighton, said: “We have set up a collection point at our secondhand superstore in Drove Road, Portslade, BN41 2PA, where these donations can be dropped off.

“Helping the homeless is the essence of what Emmaus does and this project complements this really well.”
