A St Wilfrid’s Hospice supporter has walked four kilometres a day throughout September, as part of the hospice’s virtual version of their annual Starlight Stroll event.

The annual Starlight Stroll took place last month but the event was unable to go ahead quite as usual due to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

With charities struggling during the pandemic, Fiona Fountain, who has been supporting the hospice since she and her husband moved to Eastbourne 10 years ago, was determined to help.

She described herself as a couch potato before lockdown but has increased the amount of walking she was doing to complete the challenge she had set herself.

She said: “I had made a commitment and a promise to those who were donating.

“I was determined to go out every day, come rain or shine - and amazingly I was really lucky with the weather.”

Across the month, Fiona did a variety of walks around the area, joined by her husband or by friends.

In total, these daily walks have added up to around 134 miles – well over the 120K she had originally set out to do.

She said: “I am really glad I did it and to have raised more than £1,000 – nearly ten times the target I was set – is incredible.

“I am enormously grateful to everyone who donated so far and there is still some money to come in.

“It is great to have achieved something for such a good cause and I am now looking forward to my next challenge.”
