Firefighters from London and West Sussex will be taking part in a charity walk to raise money for a Hastings woman who was given months to live after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Debby Sadler, 60, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on July 31. Her cancer has spread to her liver and, in August, she was told she had just three months to live.

To keep positive since her diagnosis, she has written a bucket list of activities she would like to compete, and started fundraising in order to pay for them.

Her son David Mayfield, who is a London firefighter, will be walking from Shoreham fire station to Brighton Palace Pier on Saturday, with half of all proceeds raised going to the Fire Fighters Charity, which supports the mental, physical and social needs of all serving and retired members of the UK’s fire family. The other half will go towards Debby’s bucket list.

David will be joined by colleagues from London, as well as West Sussex Fire, where he had been a retained firefighter for 13 years. The crews will be carrying a 13.5 metre fire service ladder weighing 100kg on the route which totals approximately ten miles.

David said: “(Mum) is no longer working and these things unfortunately have a cost. I am just asking you for a little donation that will go towards helping my mum enjoy the next few months as much as possible.”
