Former Worthing mayor was a ‘passionate campaigner’ for residents and town’s heritage

A former Worthing mayor has been remembered as a passionate campaigner for his constituents and for the heritage of the town.

Bob Clare, who was the mayor from 1984 to 1985 and made an Honorary Alderman in 2003, has passed away.

His daughter Anna said politics was ‘an enormous part’ of Mr Clare’s life and that he remained a member of the Liberal Democrats until the day he died.

She said: “He was also a fun loving and exciting person to be around with a huge depth of knowledge about engineering (he owned and restored two pre-war MGs).

“He was a naturalist, knowing all there is to know about insects, flowers, birds and even fungi.

“He was a dog lover and walked his dog for miles a day on the downs.”

Mr Clare grew up in Cobham, Surrey, and lived in Horsham before moving to Worthing in the early 70s.

He obtained a degree in microbiology from Brunel University and went to work for Beechams as a microbiologist and a health and safety expert.

He remained at the company for his entire working life until retiring in his mid-fifties.

Mr Clare joined the Liberal Party in 1972 and was elected as a borough councillor for Broadwater ward in October 1975.

He remained on the council until May, 2003.

Anna said: “Dad was a passionate campaigner for his constituents and for the heritage of Worthing.

“He was a leading light in the campaign to save Worthing Dome.”

Mr Clare married his wife Amanda in 1964. They enjoyed a happy marriage and had two children, Anna and Stephen.

He also leaves behind his grandchildren Elly and Becky, and step-grandchildren Katie and Simon.

Anna said: “Stephen and I feel immensely proud to have known him and called him our Dad.”

Mr Clare’s funeral will take place on Friday, September 18. As a mark of respect the Borough Flag will be flown at half mast on the day.

The family is asking for donations to St Barnabas House via Ian Hart Funeral Service Worthing.

The current Mayor of Worthing, councillor Lionel Harman, said: “Although I did not Know Bob personally I have spoken to those who did, and know that Councillor Bob Clare will be missed but remembered for his devotion to duty, steadfastness and commitment to the community.

“Bob was an outstanding mayor and councillor. Let us be inspired by his life and service, and continue to work in the many fields that mattered to him.”
